“The Importance of continuing the LEGACY
of Historically Black College or University”
by Kiara Jones, 2009 Knoxville Ebony Network HBCU Scholarship Winner

I believe going to an Historically Black College or University is an experience of a lifetime because it is an opportunity for African Americans to express themselves without being called a racist for speaking their minds about their own culture. Also, the fact that you are among peers that look and think like you makes it easier to connect with one another.  The option to experience black Greek life also has unlimited benefits for blacks.  In addition to all that it is a chance for educated, African Americans to come together and make a difference in the world. Also attending an Historically Black College or University would look good on a job resume especially if you are trying to work in an urban or African American establishment.
To me the Importance of continuing the LEGACY of Historically Black College or University is to show the children in our society that the sky is the limit for them despite what anybody has told because we are living proof.

I plan to attend Tennessee State University in the fall, and my intended major is Linguistics.  I would possibly study abroad where I can get a more hands on approach. I also plan on going to graduate school as well to receive my MBA, and become a foreign language interpreter. With any luck when I am good enough I will live in New York, Washington D.C., or Chicago and be the one President Barack Obama calls to interpret in meetings. After I graduate I am going to come back to the community and speak with students and encourage them to go to college and to pursue their dreams. Hopefully my striving and determination will inspire young African Americans to stay focused in school no matter how tempting or how hard life may get.
